• Morning Coat

The most important element of the look is the morning coat. The coat is usually black or grey with black being the safest cut. The morning coat is a single-breasted coat with one button in the middle. The coat curves away gradually into the distinct and famous pair of tails behind. There are usually two stylized buttons on the waist seam. The lapels are unique but nothing special. It’s usually pointed with no notch but having a notch (notch lapel) is perfectly fine. In fact, a notch lapel actually makes it more festive. However, a traditional peak lapel is a battle-tested look.

• Trouser

The trousers should not have cuffs. Historically, trousers were grey striped and the look is still prevalent but is by no mean a requirement. Please note that grey morning coats have to be worn with matching trousers. As with any wedding outfit, fit is important with a baggy look being very outlandish unless being outlandish is your aim, which is fine in some circle but usually not for morning suit.

• Vest, Shirt, Tie

A vest must always be worn. The vest can be single or double breasted. Traditionally the color of choice was dove grey but colorful vests have been a key to the modern look. If you’re going for the formal and traditional look, stick with grey. If you’re going for a more stylized and modern look, choose a more eye-catching color. The vest clearly has to sync well with the color of the tie. The color of the tie is usually made in accordance with the bride’s color to get that “couple” look. It’s honestly hard to go wrong with color (blue, green, yellow, red, pink, yellow, lavender). The color of the shirt is almost always white with a high stiff collar. French cuffs is preferable.

• Shoes and Accessories

A top hat is a nice touch but more and more people are leaning towards no top hat to give it a less “formal” look. In some settings (ex. Royal Ascot), a top hat is required. But for wedding, it might be safer to just ignore the top hat. Shoes should be well polished. With a morning suit, shoes are more noticeable than with a traditional tuxedo. A safe option is a well-polished black lace-ups. Pocket watch and chains are optional accessories for morning suit and its entire up to the groom’s style preference. Boutonnieres (buttonhole) is highly recommended for groom.
 

Selvedge Denim

• 3Sixteen – 4.5 Stars

This is as close to being the perfect pair of jean we can find. Sure you can find better quality at much higher price point. But with a price point of $200, this is simply the best bang for the buck. This jean is slightly more expensive than other brands that we’ll discuss, but the quality makes up for it. The brand use high-quality 14.5 oz red line selvedge denim manufactured in Japan. Material is also pure indigo dyed (i.e. no sulfur), which produces a very desirable deep blue color that others can’t replicate.

The jean is very comfortable to wear. The look is also unique given its deep blue/color simplicity. It’s a clean-cut handsome look. If the price point was $20 lower, we would have assigned a perfect rating.

• Naked & Famous – 4.25 Stars

This is a great quality jean and it’s simply hard to go wrong with this one. The brand is known for its broken twills pattern. The deep indigo is one of the fast fading jeans we have seen. If this is important, then Naked & Famous would fit the bill. This Canadian brand jean fit is a little different than other. Its not super skinny tight but its not baggy either. Retail price point is $170.

The one negative is the fit. It’s a different style of skinny. To some people, however, this “looser” tight is actually a positive. Keep that in mind when you’re looking at this jean (i.e. size appropriately for the fit).

• Nudies – 3.5 Stars

This Swedish brand is becoming very trendy. This brand is becoming more popular, especially at colleges. This is not a bad jean at all but the price point ($175) is a bit high for the quality. The pocket pattern is a unique feature set that some people love and some people simply do not. This pocket stitching is really hit and miss. The price point and the pocket stitching are negatives to consider when thinking about buying this jean. However, this jean brand awareness is high right now. To some people, brand awareness is important.

• APC – 3 Stars

This is a well-regarded brand and is the most widely worn brand. APC was one of the first to offer selvedge jean at an affordable price point ($175). APC has a simple but classic look. The negative on the brand, however, is that it is easily torn and fade quickly. The stitching leaves much to be desired. Though we love the look, the quality is par to even sub-par. APC does not use Japanese denim.

• Unique Styling

We’re going to highlight two relatively less known selvedge brands that deserves a shout-out because of their unique styling.

Rogue Territory  – This selvedge jean has a heightened Americana look that is cool looking when worn correctly (i.e. fit well). The price point is a bit pricey ($190)

Epaulet – This is a good, slightly less expensive (~$150) alternative other mentioned brand. It’s a minimalist look (no logo or contrast stitching).

• Cheaper Alternative

If you’re looking for inexpensive selvedge jean. We recommend two sub $100 Selvedge Jeans. You simply can’t go wrong at this price point. We highly recommend looking into Unbranded ($80) and  GAP Selvedge ($90). The former is brought to you by Urban Outfitter and is a great fitting as well as great looking brand. The GAP jean has the signature GAP heritage look that some people like, with of course the added selvedge benefit.

Not too long ago, selvedge denims were for hobbyists and rarely did people wear them. With premium jeans catching fire over the last five years, these denims have become more mainstream. These denims are regarded as some of the highest quality jean one can buy today. Also called selvage denim (as well as selfedge), these jeans are much more expensive than a common pair of jean. The higher premium is due to the perception that these jeans have “better quality.” Some people considered these jeans, the holy grail of jean, i.e. the best possible jean out there. But what does “better quality” mean and does it justify the premium?

• Some Brief History

In the old days, jeans were manufactured using old shuttle looms (you probably seen one of those in black and white movie), which was replaced with new modern looms (high speed projectile). These new looms are used to increase efficiency of production (i.e. more jeans produced per hour). However, there was a sacrifice. Jeans, under the new mode of production, had weaker edges that tend to fray over time. In other words, old looms produced better edges. Denims produced using the old looms are called selvedge denim.

Because these denims are made with older technology (i.e more labor), it costs more. Most of the old looms are in fact used in Japan, hence, some of the most expensive denim comes from Japan. These increase costs means the retail shoppers are paying more compared to other denim.

• Selvedge Denim vs Other Denim

Outside of a better edge, the selvedge jeans quality is similar or equal to those of non-selvedge jean. People mistakenly think that because it uses older technology, these jeans are better made. That is not entirely correct. Only the edge is better.

Selvedge/Selvage is desirable because the edge doesn’t fray like normal denim. This is achieved through old-style shuttle looms rather than modern looms. Without going into all the details: these denims have clean edge. The rarest and finest is Japanese Selvage denim. In fact, the highest quality denim usually comes from Japan.

One key feature is that Japanese denim used yarns that can be dyed with natural dye rather than synthetics. Some people like this authenticity. Importantly, this means that if you’re looking for that deep blue-dyed color, then selvage is the way to go. In fact, this is the most important characteristics of the denim and people have paid handsome premium for it.

• Conclusion and Recommendation

Selvedge jean has higher quality edge compared to non-selvedge jean and it allows for deeper color. But the rest of the fabric is of equal quality. If dark rich color is important to you, then it’s worth exploring. We have found the edge advantage as being very minimal. Visually, the edge looks better but very few people will likely notice.

If you decide to start exploring this trend, we would recommend 3sixteen’s as a brand. 3sixteen’s used pure indigo dyed (no sulfur) which gives the jean a more desirable blue color. APC is commonly recommended, but we think the quality is slightly subpar for the price point. Naked & Famous is also a good brand.
